There is no protective period for one day fishing licences
Rule: catch and release

Quickly flowing through the place from which it got its name, Žrnovnica is a karst river boasting numerous rapids and smaller waterfalls. It eventually merges with the sea just a few kilometers from Split, in the direction of Omiš.

In the upper course, the Žrnovnica River flows through a canyon, making access difficult for people. Consequently, this part of the river is the most preserved. A promenade is built along the lower part of the shore, while the remaining bank is covered with willows, figs, and some aquatic plants.

In the upper part of the river, typical California trout and eels can be found, as well as the critically endangered soft mouth trout solinka (Salmothymus obtusirostris salonitana). In contrast, the lower part of the river is not suitable for the survival of soft mouth trout; however, it supports a successful population of eels and California trout.

The Žrnovnica River, along with the Jadro River, is the last refuge for the endangered endemic species, soft mouth trout solinka what represents a unique catch for every angler.

Rainbow (Californian) trout

The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a species of fish. It is farmed in some places. Like species of trout, the rainbow trout is related to salmon. It is called a rainbow trout because its scales are colorful and shiny. Adult freshwater stream rainbow trout average between 0.5 and 2.5 kilograms (1 and 5 lb), while lake-dwelling and anadromous forms may reach 9 kg (20 lb).  Adult fish are distinguished by a broad reddish stripe along the lateral line, from gills to the tail, which is most vivid in breeding males.

Endemic soft mouth trout

This species spawns in the early spring and is an obligatory freshwater fish. The most obvious characteristic of the Adriatic trout is an elongated snout. It also has a small and fleshy mouth, relatively large scales and high body depth. The color of the body varies between subspecies, it is mostly green with red and black dots. There are no vertical stripes that are common in brown trout of the Adriatic Sea drainages that can be found.
